Cpl Michael Joseph Dutcher USMC, 22, of Asheville, N.C., paid the ultimate price supporting Operation Enduring Freedom while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

In 1988 Asheville, North Carolina welcomed home twin boys, Michael Joseph and David Timothy to loving parents Teresa Gentry Dutcher and the late David Dutcher (2005). With a Proud but broken heart, Asheville once again welcomes home her son, Cpl Michael Joseph Dutcher.

A 2007 graduate of Asheville High School, Cpl. Dutcher was a member of the marching band and an Outstanding member of the Marine Corps JROTC. He was engaged to be married to Ms. Rachel Adams.

Cpl Michael Joseph Dutcher arrived at the Asheville Regional Airport on Wednesday 21 September at approx. 1000. We are honored to stand with Cpl Dutcher through his final formation on Friday, 23 September when he can rest peacefully with his Brothers and Sisters at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Please excuse the following Cadets at 1110 today to represent Madison High School and show the family of this fallen Marine that all of Madison send their love, prayers, and thoughts in their time of need.

The Madison High School Army JROTC and the Madison High School Metals Shop would like to thank the American Legion Post 317 of Marshall for their support last year and their resent donation of $2000.00 for each program. This is the seventh year the post has contributed to the JROTC & Metals program. The continued support allows the JROTC Cadets to plan and conduct numerous trips and adventure type activities that they would not be able to afford with-out the posts contribution. The Metals Shop uses the money for supplies, equipment and materials which greatly expands the type and amount of work that the students can participate in. The generosity of these retired veterans and warriors is much appreciated.

JROTC Spring Break

While everyone enjoyed their spring break there were a few JROTC Cadets who volunteered their time to clean up the Madison High School campus. Their beautification of the grounds consisted of picking up trash, mowing grass, picking weeds, and sweeping sidewalks. They spent a total of five hours working on the campus. It ended with a pizza fest and a look at all they had accomplished. Also during the spring break week Cadet's went hiking on some of the local trails and ended their week with a well earned meal at Taco Bell followed by a movie, "Rio" in 3D. Thanks to Ms. Harris and her family for accompanying us on the hikes.

Owen Field Day

On Friday April 8, 2011, Madison High School JROTC went to Owen High to participate in a field day with other high schools. There were 8 different schools participating in the field day including Madison. All cadets participated in every event offered, no matter if we won or lost, cadets were cheering each other on during all events. The day was truly filled with wonderful sportsmanship and all cadets had fun. Not only was it a day to get cadets out to exercise, but it was a day to let Madison cadets learn how other schools do PT (physical training). There was an Army simulator at the field day that allowed cadets to play on the new Kinect system for the Xbox 360 and to watch a video.

Madison High School’s JROTC Fort Bragg Trip

On March 4^th-6^th, Madison High School’s Army JROTC took 19 cadets to Fort Bragg, located inFayetteville, NC. On Friday cadets went to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, where they watched a movie on the history of the airborne and specials ops, participated in a simulator that imitated the different military vehicles, aircrafts, and situations, cadets then toured the museum exhibits. The following morning cadets woke up bright and early to participate in airborne jump training by jumping or walking out of a 34 foot mock aircraft door strapped in a parachute harness, attached to a cable. This training simulated exiting an aircraft and the proper position when jumping. Fear of heights and the confidence in one’s self was displayed while all the cadets learned a lot about their own selves. Following the jump, cadets toured the JFKSpecial Warfare Museum and the 82^nd Airborne Museum. The trip came to an end Sunday with a final memorial of the United States Army Special Operations Command and 3^rd Special Forces Group Memorial with a widow and her three children, who lost a husband and father in May of 2004 while on duty in Afghanistan. In conclusion, cadets conquered fears, became more award of our nation’s military history, and what true sacrifice really means.

Erwin Field Day

JROTC will be attending Erwin Field Day this Friday, 8 April 2011. It will be a multi-event competition against other JROTC units in the area. Some of the events are: tug-o-war, volleyball, first aid litter carry, sit-ups, push-ups, 1 mile run, soccer relay, frisbee relay, and more. All things that Cadets love to do. This will be an all day event, bus will depart MHS at approximately 0815 and return to MHS at approximately 1430. Fun is mandatory.

U.S. Army PFC Christian ‘Kade' Warriner

Mills River - U.S. Army PFC Christian Kade Warriner, 19, was killed in active duty on Sunday, November 14, 2010, in the Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am today in Asheville followed by burial service at the National Cemetery in Black Mountain.

The following Cadets will be attending the memorial service and funeral for the above listed individual. If they miss your class, please provide them the opportunity to make it up. They will be departing at 11:10 for the remainder of the day.

Madison Middle School Veterans Day

Formal Inspection

JROTC underwent its second formal inspection by U.S. Army Cadet Command conducted by representative from 4th Brigade JROTC, Fort Bragg, NC on Thursday, Oct. 28. During their first inspection in 2008, this unit achieved the ranking of “Honor Unit.” This time, they achieved the highest ranking possible -- “Honor Unit with Distinction.” To achieve this level, the cadets had to earn a minimum of 96 percent in each of the ten categories inspected. Please take time today to congratulate any Cadets you have in class or may see throughout the day. Since August they have been putting in numerous extra hours preparing for this inspection.

Honoring World War II vets (Honor Air)

On Saturday October 16th 2010 Madison High School JROTC cadets met up at the Wagon Wheel in Mars Hill at 5 o clock in the morning to honor our World War II Veterans with a Color Guard. The three Madison county WW II Veterans honored were (Tommy Lipe, Bud Ramsey, and Don Levitt). JROTC was there to send off our three veterans on there Honor Air trip to visit the World War II memorial on the mall, Arlington Cemetery and other Washington D.C. sites. The cadets that participated in the Color Guard were Taryn Garew, Joseph Nash, Gina Mehaffey and Marissa Rockey. That evening five Madison High School JROTC cadets and hundreds of scouts, other JROTC units, the Patriot Guard Riders and everyday civilians showed up at the Asheville Airport to welcome back our three Madison County veterans and 94 other WNC WW II veterans who flew on the latest Honor Air flight to DC. There wasn't a dry eye In the place and everyone enjoyed it and thanked every veteran. Just seeing the veterans faces light up in excitement was very moving. It really makes you happy and grateful that people, then and now, continue to defend this great country.

War Memorial Dedication

On Wednesday, November 11, 2009 nine JROTC cadets spent about two hours in the rain to see the dedication of a new memorial in Asheville. The program preluded with the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus. The 82nd Airborne Chorus marched in and showed all the people, who attended the dedication, a portion of the preparation of the jumping out of a C-130 (Hercules) airplane. They sang different cadences and songs after the C-130 simulation. At two o’clock the ceremony began. The ceremony consisted of speeches, memories, and the process to get the memorial constructed. Flags were raised by several other JROTC units and a local Boy Scout troop. Representative Heath Shuler and Richard Burr attended and were pointed out for supporting the dedication and building of the monument. The monument is at Pack Square in Downtown Asheville.

Veterans Day Celebration

On November 10, 2008 the Madison High JROTC presented the colors at the annual Veterans Day celebration at Madison Middle School. The color guard for the ceremony consisted of- Darren Diedrich, Wesley Ensley, Britney Radin and Ian Bond. The Madison Middle dance and choir clubs both put together performances for the veterans. Overall the celebration was a wonderful honor for veterans everywhere
